The area around SNP Square is currently a sequence of interconnected spatially complex parts with different character. It is surrounded by very dominant buildings, distinctive not only in their function but also in their architecture. The design is based on a rigorous analysis of the site in terms of the movement of people and traffic, as well as the amount of greenery and water. The intention was to ensure as much integration of green spaces as possible while allowing free movement of people throughout the square. With the help of fractal geometry, we will form an imaginary carpet of pavement laid across the entire area. Its basis is a triangular network. The triangles are multidirectional and fill the historically growing shape of the square. We choose a system of unique triangular paving elements made of artificial stone in four different sizes. The elements allow for combinations of grassed joints of different thicknesses and sizes. By combining the 16 base stones, a variety of scales and smooth transitions between paved and grassed areas can be achieved. The triangular base of the system unifies the whole area and thus becomes a characteristic element of Bratislava’s most important public space.
